Keep their attention

Over the past 20 years, researchers have been able to provide us with a pretty short list of what we pay attention to: pictures, movement, novelty, emotion and stories. There are many more individual items, but most of what we pay attention to falls into one of these five categories. The trick isn’t knowing what we pay attention to, but knowing how to weave those things into a presentation, especially one that doesn’t have obvious tie-ins to these attention-triggers. And the key to keeping an audience’s attention isn’t in adding these things to your presentation, but in recognizing them in your presentation and highlighting them for your audience.
